Ask when the best month to get married is and you get the same answer everywhere: September, October, May, June. Good weather, long evenings, nice photos.
Our data agrees, and that is the problem. Those months are popular, so they cost the most. We looked at 20 popular U.S. wedding destinations and compared two things by month: how many couples searched for venues on Engine for a wedding in that month, and what hotels in that destination were charging. The short version is that the best month depends on where you are getting married, and a cheaper month with similar weather is usually one to three months from the popular one.
The most popular months to get married
Across our 20 destinations, wedding-venue searches come in two waves.
- October is the busiest month, with 15% of all searches.
- September and May are next at 12% each, then June at 11% and April at 10%.
- Fall and spring together take 59% of the year's searches.
- January is the quietest month at 2%. December and February get 4% each.
Seven of the 20 destinations peak in October: Charleston, Savannah, Nashville, New Orleans, Napa Valley, Las Vegas, and Virginia Beach. Chicago and Boulder peak in September. The spring peaks are mostly in places where summer is too hot or too stormy: Austin, Miami, St. Augustine, and Temecula in April or May. Key West peaks in March and Miami in April, ahead of hurricane season.
The cheapest months, on average
Hotel rates across the 20 destinations move with the crowd.
- January is the cheapest month on average, at $184 a night.
- December ($211) and November ($219) are next.
- October is the most expensive at $262. May, June, July, and September all sit within a few dollars of $252.
Averages hide the useful part. October is expensive because New York, Napa, and Nashville are among the priciest destinations that month. It is one of the cheapest months in Hawaii, Miami, and Temecula.
The off-peak alternative in each destination
For every destination we found the peak search month, then the cheapest month within a few months of it that still clears that destination's weather bar. Weather is a 0 to 100 score from temperature, humidity, and storm or fire season, and the alternative month has to score at least 83% of the destination's best month. For the five destinations in the Atlantic hurricane belt we skip June through November even when those months are cheaper.
Three things stand out in that table.
- Booking off peak drops hotel rates 21% on average across the 20.
- Napa Valley is the most extreme: December instead of October saves 43%, and December scores 81 on weather against October's 82. The vines are bare, but the valley is the same and the tasting rooms are open.
- The flat markets barely reward timing. Austin saves 8%, Asheville and St. Augustine 9%, Chicago and Miami 10%. In those places, book for availability, not price.
We saw the same pattern in our own wedding bookings. One wedding paid $360 a night at a Newport hotel for a July weekend. Another paid $214 at the same hotel the first weekend of May.
What you give up
The cheaper month is cheaper for a reason. Charleston in December is around 55°F, the gardens are quiet, and the historic homes are decorated for the holidays, so plan an indoor reception. August in Chicago is hot and humid and full of tourists. July in Boulder brings afternoon thunderstorms, so hold the ceremony in the morning.
Every card on the full study says what the trade is for that destination, so you can decide whether the saving is worth it. In most cases the swap is a few degrees, a different backdrop, and a quieter town.
So when is the best month to get married?
If you want the short answer:
- For the weather and the photos, September or October in most of the country, and you will pay for it.
- For the price with weather that still cooperates, look one to three months from your destination's peak. In the South, that usually means November or December. In the Midwest and Northeast it varies: Chicago and New York dip in July and August, Newport in May. In California, San Diego and Santa Barbara dip in September and October, Napa in December, Temecula in April.
- If your date is set and the place is flexible, the month-by-month table on the full study shows a lower-priced and a higher-priced destination for every month of the year.

How we did this
- Demand is wedding-venue searches on Engine for weddings dated in 2026, by destination and by the month of the wedding, not the month of the search. 8,465 searches in total across the 20 destinations.
- Nightly rates are the average a hotel in each destination showed in Engine searches that month. It is the going rate for the city, not a wedding-specific rate and not Engine's negotiated rate.
- The 20 destinations come from wedding-planning lists like The Knot's best U.S. destination wedding spots, narrowed to places with enough data. Aspen and Banff were too thin and were swapped for close substitutes.
- Search volume is small in a few destinations (Napa, Asheville, Key West, Boulder), so treat those rows as ballpark.
