Tides Folly Beach, Charleston's Oceanfront Hotel

It is an older hotel. The view from the room was beautiful. There was a compressor outside our room so between it and the room air conditioner it was noisy. The lock on the sliding glass door needs to be repaired and the electrical outlets in the TV stand did not work. The shower was hot but water pressure was weak. There are no hooks for wet towels or swimsuits. The staff was helpful and friendly. The nearby eating places were great.

The grouper sandwich was way too slaty. Unfortunately I could not eat it.

The location is fantastic, it doesn’t get better. Everything is walkable and having the beach right outside and the ocean view is the reason to stay here. That’s definitely what you’re paying for. The rooms are a bit rundown, the sliding door to the patio you really had to yank open and it didn’t lock. There was a coffee drip stain on the side table, the mini fridge only has water in it. I’ve paid the same amount for much more luxury rooms but just know the price is really for the location. The included beach chairs were a great plus!

Please note: no hair dryers in rooms. The staff was great! The mattresses were hard as a bullet. Rooms were clean, however floor was a little sandy. The beach view was amazing!

Pleasant

Obviously the location was fantastic. Ocean front, and every room has a wonderful view of the ocean, pool and pier. There isn’t anything that we didn’t like. The most minor thing would be maybe a little bit larger fridge and maybe the addition of another mirror, a full length one would be really nice.

I like the ocean view I did not like that. The patio door was hard to open. It was rusted. The hotel room needs to be updated. It’s old fashioned not worth the money at all for what I paid.. I had to ask them to come clean my room because they wasn’t going clean it the next day.. the baseboards on the walls need to be clean ..

Superb

All rooms are oceanfront. Beautiful and easy access to the beach. Small balcony, bring your own camping chairs to sit on it. The hotel is a little dated. We didn’t like rooms not being painted and freshening up scratches . You had to wait until almost 5 pm before cleaning staff came to replace towels make beds. We are used to that being handled by noon. We felt the floors in the room had not been cleaned before arrival. There is a small refrigerator in the room but no microwave which would have been convenient. There was also no phone to reach the front desk. There were two elevators, but one was frequently out of service causing wait times. Overall, we enjoyed a lot about staying at the Tides. We wish they would work a little more on freshening up the rooms and cleaning. The beach and walkable restaurants make it very convenient.

The property is old. Holes in walls were patched, but not painted. Rusted sprinklers and door hinges. The side of the building facing the ocean is not flat, but staggered, so there are 9 rooms that are right up against that transition, so those 9 rooms give you half view of the f the ocean, and the rest of a giant wall, which should be considered partial view. The AC unit was great. Great beach access with free chairs for guests. You aren't allowed to bring your own food or drink to the pool or patio. You can only buy drinks from their bar/restaurant. Save yourself some money and eat/drink in your room before you go down to the pool or beach. Alcohol is not allowed on the beach (local laws). This is the only beachfront hotel in the area, and private rentals are apparently limited due to local regulations, which is probably how they justify higher prices for what I certainly would not consider "Premium", by any means.

View. Closeness to the beach.

The good: clean room,friendly staff,bed was comfortable,great location. The bad: bell hops didn't care to help at all as far as taking luggage to the room not sure if this is normal. Phone in the room didn't work fridge was frozen over no fan in bathroom. No microwave. Mirror outside of bathroom was missing. Other than that had a great stay.

Now for the downside. Shabby chic would be an upgrade. The rooms were clean but for the price and full occupancy, the rooms need a complete makeover. AC not connected to the condensation discharge on the balcony. The balcony left a lot to be desired. Would easily rebook another stay only due to the staff and amenities.

Once I checked in, they added 100$ for any amenities that I may use which was acceptable. They ended up charging my card 100$ for each day of my stay. Then they charged me another 516$ for the room charges. When asked why, all they could say was that their system had a glitch and I’d be getting my money back in 3-5 business days. I use a vacation account and the extra over 900$ made me be very frugal during my stay. I go on vacation to enjoy myself, not to watch every penny. Needless to say, I won’t be going back there.

Beautiful views, but patio door very difficult to open and close/lock. Very hot days and water not always available in lobby. That was disappointing. Great location for sure. We make many trips to Folly, first time staying at hotel. Morning coffee in lobby would be nice versus having to go to Starbucks every morning.Many hotels offer that in our experience. It's a nice way to start the day. The view and location are the reason to stay. Folly is always great

Very overpriced for outdated hotel. As the only hotel in the area I guess you don’t really have a choice! Extremely Disappointed!

Overall we enjoyed our stay. Room was clean and the view amazing. One negative, the provided beach chairs are not much. We ended up renting the lounge chairs and umbrella from private company not affiliate with the hotel.

Great people, good service! Disappointing that you’re not supposed to bring the towels to the beach. Pool needed a cleaning. Overall great place to stay to enjoy the beach, shops, restaurants on foot.

2nd wonderful stay in a lovely hotel with everything we needed on hand or within walking distance.
