Culture memo.

By Elia Wallen

Engine started by accident, but our growth has been anything but. It began when customers kept asking us for more: hotels, logistics and cost controls built for real businesses, not Fortune 500 budgets. We built it for them, and we're always looking a step ahead to what they'll need next.

The throughline is customer obsession. Loyalty is earned, not locked in by contracts, which is why the platform has always been free to use.

The opportunity ahead is massive. More than half of small and midsize business travel spend is still unmanaged, and Engine is built to close that gap. That takes a culture as ambitious as the mission. Culture isn't words on a wall. It's who we hire, how we work and what we reward.

Our DNA: the traits that define who belongs here

Customer obsessed

Our success begins and ends with our customers. Loyalty is earned through every interaction, every day. We win only when our customers win.

Drivers, not passengers

Everyone takes the wheel. We act like owners, solve problems when we see them and carry outcomes to the finish. No task is beneath us, and no idea is too bold.

Speed with precision

The opportunity is too big to slow down. We move fast without cutting corners, decide quickly and remove bureaucracy.

Insist on high standards

We raise the bar in our products, our work and every customer interaction. Every seat is earned, and underperformance is addressed quickly and respectfully.

Conviction with rationale

We say what we mean and back it with logic. We debate openly, stay curious and let the best ideas win. Progress requires alignment, not consensus.

Deliver results

Execution is everything. We cut distractions, prioritize what moves the mission forward and measure progress by impact, not effort.

Innovate and elevate

Curiosity drives us. We question, experiment, learn fast and keep mastering our craft to stay at the leading edge.

Operating principles.

Our DNA is who belongs here. These are how we work: the specific behaviors we expect, consistently. Real autonomy, real ownership and real reward, with standards to match.

The mindset we bring

  1. Mission firstThe mission comes before individual preference, convenience, ego and side agendas.
  2. Complacency killsComfort is our greatest threat, so urgency is our default. Markets shift and assumptions expire.
  3. Work hard on what mattersSustained intensity on the work that moves the business, including the unglamorous parts.

How we build

  1. Speed of light executionWe measure against what's possible, not historical norms or industry averages.
  2. CupcakesSmall, complete, delightful releases. Minimum lovable, not minimum viable.
  3. Complexity is the enemyQuestion every requirement and simplify relentlessly.
  4. Flat by designFewer layers, so information, accountability and decisions move fast.
  5. Single owner DRIEvery meaningful effort has one owner, accountable for the whole outcome.
  6. Details decide outcomesExcellence is the sum of small decisions done right.

How we communicate and learn

  1. Blunt and direct communicationPrecise, brief and actionable. We don't pad, hedge or soften at the expense of clarity.
  2. Truth over comfortCandor is expected. If something is weak, say so, with evidence and a point of view.
  3. Unfiltered edge intelligenceLeaders hear directly from the people closest to the customer, the code and the problem.
  4. Public learning from failureMistakes made visible become shared lessons. A real swing that misses still teaches us something.

You'll thrive here if you…

  • Want autonomy, ownership and the freedom to move fast
  • Take big bets and own the outcome either way
  • Want direct feedback, not managed messaging
  • Measure yourself by impact, not effort
  • Are here to do the best work of your career

Mission first.

By Heather Krueger

Our mission is to power the future of travel. To win, we have to move faster and work more cohesively than anyone else, so the collective goal comes before individual preference, convenience, ego and side agendas.

That also means Engine doesn't take corporate positions on social, religious or political matters unrelated to our work. A unified team is a competitive advantage. We'd rather be a place where people of every background and belief can focus on the same goal.

We support our people. When outside events affect someone's life, our flexibility, volunteer hours and unlimited PTO give them the time and space they need. We support the person, while staying neutral on the politics.
