Historic Strater Hotel

I really enjoyed my stay at the Strater Hotel. The rooms are cozy and the bed was som comfortable. I enjoyed the bar and restaurant on site and I was in the heart of Durango.

The saloon was great with wonderful nightly entertainment especially the bluegrass entertainment on Sunday night. Also, our room was very comfortable and clean.

The hotel has three connected restaurants, two of which have live music in the evenings. All three have good drink menus, and delicious food. The bad news... It's a historic hotel, and with that cones all of the poorly designed things associated with old buildings. The pipes creek and groan all night long. The walls are paper thin, so you'll get to enjoy participating in your neighbors discussions when they get back at 10pm on whether they think so and so is going to enjoy their surprise birthday party. Come morning, you don't need to bother setting an alarm clock, as you'll hear the whole hallway's piercing smoke-detector-like beeping pass from room to room, as you get to judge your fellow tenants on how many to times they feel it's acceptable to snooze their alarm. The beds are straight out of the 1970s, made of 100% all natural spring steel. Don't sit down too quickly or you'll find yourself falling back on the floor. It's currently 6am, and I'm now wide awake for the second morning in a row. The charm of this place wore off quickly.

The property is beautiful but the staff person who helped us check in was rather short and unfriendly . There was one other couple there being waited on by another staff person who was upbeat and was informing them about the restaurants in hotel and other information. The lady waiting on us , took our names, handed us keys and said nothing else to us . No obecrhse was in the lobby so it wasn’t bc they were too busy

Stay here if the 1887 brick-and-walnut atmosphere, helpful staff, and walk-to-everything downtown spot matter more than a plush bed, sparkling-clean modern room, or extras. If you want updated comfort and consistent cleanliness, look at newer properties nearby and treat the Strater as a place to tour and have a drink rather than your overnight base. The history and setting are genuine; the rooms have not kept pace.

I like the history of the property

This is a lovely historic hotel in the ideal location in downtown Durango. The two taverns with live music had good food and drinks but we mostly enjoyed the music. The whole hotel has such an elegant decor. We loved our stay and would recommend this hotel.

Beautiful old hotel, Clean, but noisy fan in bathroom that you must use with light! Bed’s mattress needs to be replaced. Great location and historic.

Beautiful historic hotel centrally located. We were situated in a smaller room (418)on 4th floor. Quiet location and charming narrow gauge just 7minute walk. Perfect getaway in a cool town in the west. Enjoy your travels !

Nice room decor but bathroom was very small. A large person would struggle to fit between the door and sink

The hotel is convenient to the train depot and all downtown locations. The staff however left a lot to be desired. While we arrived before check-in, there is never a reason to be rude. It was early when we arrived and we were told the room was not ready. We went out to lunch then returned to the hotel. It was now 3:45 but we were told, once again, that it was not yet 4:00. We waited another few minutes before being given a room directly above the saloon and below the staircase to the third floor, not exactly a room to get a lot of rest in. The room itself was lovely, just not quiet enough for a restful night's sleep.

The "resort fee" seems a bit much, but it is an excellent property.

Old downtown hotel. It was clean and convenient. Parking was a little pain, but manageable. Would definitely stay here again.

It is a nice old hotel. It is just limited in accessibility because of its age. It has a number of steps which you must use to access the hotel and has only one small, slow elevator. Its location is great and was a fun place to spend a couple nights.
