Red Caboose Motel
About Red Caboose Motel
All aboard! Hop on a caboose car at the Red Caboose Motel for a fun and unique overnight stay. All 38 cabooses (19 of which were once part of the Pennsylvania Railroad) are decorated in the paint schemes of America's most famous railroads. The rooms are divided into 11 general floor plans, each catered to the number of guests for the evening. There's also a baggage car, mail car and a home away from home called the Shady Rest Hotel Farmhouse Efficiency Suite. And the best part is, you never have to leave the property -- it has everything you could possibly need on site. Explore Amish life on an Amish buggy ride, play games at the arcade, pet animals at the zoo. There's also a restaurant on-site, Casey Jones' Restaurant, and for a late-night snack, guests can stop by the take-out ice cream parlor, Janie Jones’.

The bed sheets were too old! The disposable cups in our room had already been used! everything is good ! Kids are like that trip!
-
wish there are more amenities and activities on the property

One-of-a-kind property. Stay in a train and eat in the dining car.

It was a great place to visit! The only negative is that we didn’t spend a longer time there, so that’s on us! There was so much to do. The kids loved feeding the animals. The accommodation was fun, clean and so unique.

We love this place! It’s out 5th time and I made reservations for next year already.

Cool place we loved it Christen at the check in desk was awesome. We will be back

We did find the overall accommodations could used a more thorough cleaning (some dead bugs around windows and baseboards). Some additional maintenance would help spruce things up a bit (hole in bathroom door, switch covers not covering the cutout). These were BY NO MEANS dealbreakers, though - and not even something we'd raise with the staff - especially on our short stay. The AC units were a little loud, but we were happy to have them in 90 degree heat! The location is beautiful, quiet, and convenient to Lancaster and Strasburg attractions. The petting zoo was nice to have onsite. We had a great time and will stay here again. It was a fun little adventure!

No side tables nor place to open your luggage.

The room and housekeeping was great. The property and location was spectacular with the Strasburg railroad steam engine running right by the property several times a day. The onsite restaurant was good, but was always out of something on the menu (waffles, potatoes). The room was quite small, but that was to be expected for a renovated caboose. The only real negative was the ice machine which I found to be either out of ice or dirty or both.

The staff were the kindest people! I traveled with family ages 2-75 yrs old and there was something for everyone- the cool train hotel room, restaurant, gift shop, quiet farm scenery, petting zoo- and we came to Pennsylvania with a list of places to go the location was perfectly in the center of our list making it about the same distance to each adventure Playground was very small (2 swings and a wooden train) also put near the road rather than out back near the animals or somewhere safer for little ones

A unique and fun stay with many options for room layouts. Stayed in the honey moon room which had a Jacuzzi tub in the main room area. Staff were friendly and helpful. Animals were sweet. Did not do the buggy ride. Attempted to eat breakfast at the restaurant but it was a 45-1 hour wait and there was barely anyone seated. Appeared to be not enough staff. The rooms were clean enough. Gives the feel of staying in a camper. Fly swatters are provided inside as insects can be an issue.

We were so impressed with the level of service offered. The front desk called to ensure our Caboose was the way we expected and to remind us they were available if we had any questions. While we didn’t ask for housekeeping, we did want towels for the second day and we were able to get them immediately! We wished we had gotten the opportunity to visit the Toy Museum, but we thoroughly enjoyed riding on the train, which is literally within walking distance (or a very short drive). I cannot say enough great things about this hotel. We stayed at two locations during our trip to PA and the Red Caboose Hotel was by far the best location! Thank you for a memorable trip!

We stayed in a Caboose with 1 double bed and a set of bunk-beds. The kids said their beds were comfy. The double bed was too firm and uncomfortable. The bathroom is tiny, with just a toilet and a stand-up shower (very cramped & the floor was creaky). The sink is located outside the bathroom in the room with the bunk-beds. There was a small table with 2 chairs, a small refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker located in the Caboose as well. The accommodations could use some minor repairs & updates (windowsills are peeling, the curtain rods are not sturdy and fell with the faintest touch, panel cover had a hole, etc). Most of the electrical outlets are in use for the AC, fridge, and lights, so it was a struggle to find someplace to plug in phone chargers. We did not take advantage of the on-site restaurant, toy train museum, or other amenities. All-in-all, our stay was pleasant and the kids really enjoyed staying in a unique "room." The location may be a little out of the way, but it was the perfect place for watching the sunset over the open fields.

Lots of photo opportunities. Scenery, very comfortable and right next to an Amish farm. Tight quarters

Nice, clean room. Friendly and helpful staff.

It was fun and cool idea. We really enjoyed staying in our caboose.

The Red Caboose Motel is unlike any other lodging experience you’ll ever have. The motel offers an escape from the hustle and bustle of the modern world by creating a nostalgic experience in the middle of Amish Country. The daily steam train excursions through the property are a wonderful addition to the experience and the inside dining at Casey Jones’ means leaving the area isn’t necessary. Thanks for another great stay!

This is a fun one or two night stopover for families. Cabooses that sleep 6 are tight but fine for 1-2 nights. Not really a place for multiple night stay in my opinion. Definitely visit the National Toy Train museum next door and make the trip train themed.

Check in super easy. Staff very friendly and helpful. Location is perfect. Only two bath towels for five people.

This place is fantastic for families! Our kids loved the caboose hotel room, the animals and restaurant. Our only disappointment was that the bunks in the room were hard and a bit uncomfortable. There was also just a sheet and thin blanket for the kids bunks and my kids were cold. Having and actual comforter would have made it much more comfortable. The pillows were also quite flat and felt old. We will return because it was so great but will be bringing more blankets and pillows with us.
