Apply in minutes. Be able to spend the next day.

Getting started with Engine X is fast, straightforward, and done entirely on the Engine platform. Here's exactly what to expect, from your first click to your team's first swipe.

Engine X business charge card

The Engine X application takes about 15 minutes and is completed entirely inside the Engine platform. Most businesses receive a decision and an assigned line of credit within 24 hours, with no personal credit check required.1 Below is a step-by-step walkthrough of what to expect.

How it works

Step 1. Create your Engine account (or log in)

To apply for Engine X, you'll first create a free Engine account. This takes just minutes and only requires your work email. Why? Because Engine X works best as part of the Engine platform, where your team can book business travel and manage all company spend in one place. Your card transactions, Engine travel bookings, and monthly statements all live in the same dashboard. No fragmented data, and no duplicate tools.

If your company already uses Engine, just log in. You'll be taken directly to the Engine X application from your dashboard.

What you'll do: Go to engine.com/x, enter your work email, and create a free account. Or log in if you're already on Engine.
Time: 2 minutes (or less if you're already a customer)

Step 2. Complete your application

Once you're in, navigate to the Engine X section of your dashboard and complete the short application in the platform. You'll fill in basic business details including your business's legal name, EIN, and address, along with information about the primary business owner or controlling officer (typically the business owner, CEO, or a senior executive) for identity verification.

This identity verification step is a standard requirement for any business charge card program, driven by federal banking regulations. It's not unique to Engine X.

In some cases, we may request financial statements. This is not to create barriers, but to calibrate a higher line of credit to your actual business needs.

What you'll need: Business information and controlling officer details. Full list in the "What to have ready" section below.
Time: 15 minutes

WHY WE ASK Why a business charge card requires personal owner information

Providing business ownership details might feel more personal than you'd expect for a corporate charge card. Here's why this step is required and why it's actually in your interest.

To comply with federal banking regulations, financial institutions are required to verify the identity of the individuals behind a business applying for a financial account. This helps prevent fraud, protect customers, and maintain a secure financial platform.

Engine X is issued in partnership with Stripe and Fifth Third Bank N.A. (Member FDIC), and follows the same identity verification standards across the financial industry.

Beyond compliance, this information helps us better understand your business and deliver a financial experience designed to fit your company, not a one-size-fits-all threshold.

How your information is protected

  • We do not sell your business or personal data to third-party marketers. Full stop.
  • All application data is stored securely with restricted access and bank-level encryption.
  • Personal information is used solely for account onboarding, compliance, and servicing, and we will collect only the minimum amount of information needed for each stage.

One more thing: applying for Engine X does not result in a hard credit pull and will not impact your personal credit score.1 We also do not require personal guarantees.

Step 3. Get your decision

After you submit, our team reviews your application. Most businesses receive a decision and an assigned line of credit within 24 hours. In some cases, extended review may take up to 5–7 business days. If we need any additional documentation, we'll reach out by email with clear next steps.

You can track your application status at any time from the Engine X section on your dashboard.

What you'll do: Nothing. We'll contact you.
Time: 24 hours in most cases

Step 4. Accept your offer

When approved, you'll receive your personalized line of credit and terms. Log back into your Engine account and accept the offer directly from your dashboard. The date you accept becomes your billing cycle date going forward.

What you'll do: Review and accept your terms on the platform.
Time: 2 minutes

Step 5. Issue cards and start spending

Connect your bank account to pay your Engine X statements and start issuing cards.

Complete the onboarding steps, and issue virtual cards to your team the same day. Set spend controls by employee, project, or expense type.

Physical cards are delivered within 8 business days after issuance. Each cardholder receives an email invite to accept and activate their card in the app.

From that point on, every Engine travel booking and every Engine X card transaction appears in one dashboard. One statement. Every dollar tracked and categorized. Zero surprises at month end.

What you'll do: Configure card policies, issue cards, start spending.
Time: Same day

What to have ready

Most businesses complete the application in under 15 minutes. Here's what to pull up before you start.

Business information

  • Legal business name (must match IRS documentation, including upper/lower case, symbols, and/or punctuation placement)
  • Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN)
  • Business website URL
  • Physical business address (must match tax filings; P.O. boxes not accepted)
  • Business profile: employee count, annual revenue, fiscal year-end, and industry
  • Legal structure (e.g., LLC, C-Corp)
  • Estimated monthly business spend with Engine X

Controlling officer information

A controlling officer is any executive, director, or senior manager authorized to represent the business. You'll need their:

  • Full legal name, job title, and email address
  • Date of birth
  • U.S. residential address (must match government-issued ID)
  • Last 4 digits of their Social Security Number (SSN). In most cases, this is all we need. Many other financial institutions require the full 9-digit number.

This is the minimum level of information required by federal law for identity verification. See the callout above for full context.

Individuals with 25%+ ownership

Federal banking law requires verification of any individual who owns 25% or more of the business, even if they're not involved in daily operations. You'll need their:

  • Full legal name
  • Date of birth
  • Residential address (must match government-issued ID)
  • Just the last 4 SSN digits

Financial statements (optional at initial step)

For higher lines of credit, we may request recent balance sheets or income statements to support a more comprehensive review.

About the application

Engine X is available to U.S.-incorporated businesses with U.S. operations and a U.S.-based physical address. This means the business must be a registered legal entity (such as an LLC, corporation, or LLP). Sole proprietors and unincorporated businesses are not eligible at this time. There are no state-specific restrictions.

About 15 minutes. The application is completed entirely inside the Engine platform. No forms to print, no emails to send, and no third-party portals. Most businesses receive a decision within 24 hours. If additional review is needed, it may take up to 5–7 business days. Either way, you'll hear from us.

No. Applying for Engine X does not result in a hard credit pull and will not impact your personal credit score.1

This is a federal requirement, not specific to Engine X. Any financial institution offering a business charge card is required to verify the real people behind the business.

In most cases, we only collect the last 4 digits of an owner's SSN, not the full 9-digit number, to keep this step as simple as possible. If the owner does not have an SSN, we ask for the last 4 digits of a government-issued ID (e.g., passport).

Your information is stored with bank-level security, used solely for compliance and account servicing, and never shared with third-party marketers.

Financial statements, like a balance sheet or income statement, allow us to better understand your business and evaluate your application. These documents are generally optional at the initial application stage.

Your line of credit is determined after your application is reviewed, based on your business profile and financial information.

Log into your Engine account and check the Engine X section on your dashboard. You'll also receive email updates if we need additional information or when a decision has been made.

Once you accept your offer and connect your bank account, you can issue virtual cards. Your team can start spending the same day. Physical cards are shipped after issuance and will be delivered within 8 business days.

Yes. Once you connect a bank account, you can issue additional virtual or physical cards to new team members directly from your dashboard at any time. No new application required.

About Engine X

The Engine X Card is a business charge card for companies that travel. Issue cards to your employees, control what they can spend, and earn rewards on every purchase, including up to 10% back in points on Engine travel bookings and 1.5% on everything else.2 It connects directly to your Engine account, so travel bookings and all other business expenses (e.g., meals, software subscriptions, and more) live in one platform. No annual fees.3

No annual fees and no application fees. Engine X is free to use. See the Program Terms page for a full summary of terms.3

Engine X is a charge card, which means the full balance is due each billing cycle rather than carried month to month. Unlike a credit card, a charge card does not let you carry a balance forward. Your payment due date and balance are always visible from your Engine dashboard, and you can set up Autopay for automatic payment each cycle.

No. If you already earn Engine Rewards through your travel bookings, those points transfer seamlessly to the Engine X rewards program. You won't lose a single point. With Engine X, you will earn more. Rewards tiers range from 6% back in points at Silver to up to 10% back in points at Diamond, based on annual spend.2

Direct Bill offers a line of credit for hotel, flight, and car bookings made through Engine. Engine X extends that same flexibility to cover all business expenses, including both Engine.com bookings and everyday spend. You also get higher rewards tiers, unlimited physical and virtual cards, and full visibility into company-wide spend in one place. Both are free, and existing Direct Bill accounts can apply for Engine X in minutes.3

Today, Engine X integrates with QuickBooks Online, and we're continuing to expand integrations with everyday accounting and finance tools.

  1. Applying for Engine X does not result in a hard credit pull or impact your credit score.
  2. Earn up to 10% back in points on eligible Engine travel purchases. Actual reward rates vary by reward tier and purchase category and may change. Points have no cash value and are redeemable for rewards through our program. See full rewards terms for details.
  3. See program terms for details. Engine X Visa® Commercial cards issued by Fifth Third Bank N.A., Member FDIC. Terms and conditions apply. All applications subject to credit approval.
