The Engine X application takes about 15 minutes and is completed entirely inside the Engine platform. Most businesses receive a decision and an assigned line of credit within 24 hours, with no personal credit check required.1 Below is a step-by-step walkthrough of what to expect.
How it works
Step 1. Create your Engine account (or log in)
To apply for Engine X, you'll first create a free Engine account. This takes just minutes and only requires your work email. Why? Because Engine X works best as part of the Engine platform, where your team can book business travel and manage all company spend in one place. Your card transactions, Engine travel bookings, and monthly statements all live in the same dashboard. No fragmented data, and no duplicate tools.
If your company already uses Engine, just log in. You'll be taken directly to the Engine X application from your dashboard.
Step 2. Complete your application
Once you're in, navigate to the Engine X section of your dashboard and complete the short application in the platform. You'll fill in basic business details including your business's legal name, EIN, and address, along with information about the primary business owner or controlling officer (typically the business owner, CEO, or a senior executive) for identity verification.
This identity verification step is a standard requirement for any business charge card program, driven by federal banking regulations. It's not unique to Engine X.
In some cases, we may request financial statements. This is not to create barriers, but to calibrate a higher line of credit to your actual business needs.
WHY WE ASK Why a business charge card requires personal owner information
Providing business ownership details might feel more personal than you'd expect for a corporate charge card. Here's why this step is required and why it's actually in your interest.
To comply with federal banking regulations, financial institutions are required to verify the identity of the individuals behind a business applying for a financial account. This helps prevent fraud, protect customers, and maintain a secure financial platform.
Engine X is issued in partnership with Stripe and Fifth Third Bank N.A. (Member FDIC), and follows the same identity verification standards across the financial industry.
Beyond compliance, this information helps us better understand your business and deliver a financial experience designed to fit your company, not a one-size-fits-all threshold.
How your information is protected
- We do not sell your business or personal data to third-party marketers. Full stop.
- All application data is stored securely with restricted access and bank-level encryption.
- Personal information is used solely for account onboarding, compliance, and servicing, and we will collect only the minimum amount of information needed for each stage.
One more thing: applying for Engine X does not result in a hard credit pull and will not impact your personal credit score.1 We also do not require personal guarantees.
Step 3. Get your decision
After you submit, our team reviews your application. Most businesses receive a decision and an assigned line of credit within 24 hours. In some cases, extended review may take up to 5–7 business days. If we need any additional documentation, we'll reach out by email with clear next steps.
You can track your application status at any time from the Engine X section on your dashboard.
Step 4. Accept your offer
When approved, you'll receive your personalized line of credit and terms. Log back into your Engine account and accept the offer directly from your dashboard. The date you accept becomes your billing cycle date going forward.
Step 5. Issue cards and start spending
Connect your bank account to pay your Engine X statements and start issuing cards.
Complete the onboarding steps, and issue virtual cards to your team the same day. Set spend controls by employee, project, or expense type.
Physical cards are delivered within 8 business days after issuance. Each cardholder receives an email invite to accept and activate their card in the app.
From that point on, every Engine travel booking and every Engine X card transaction appears in one dashboard. One statement. Every dollar tracked and categorized. Zero surprises at month end.
What to have ready
Most businesses complete the application in under 15 minutes. Here's what to pull up before you start.
