Massachusetts Per Diem Rates 2027: Boston & Statewide GSA Guide

Business traveler in a suit talking on a phone while seated in the back of a car.

Massachusetts business travel budgets depend on both destination and travel dates. Boston's lodging ceiling changes several times during the federal fiscal year, while Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard have particularly high summer allowances. For travel managers, finance leaders, and executive assistants arranging conferences, offsites, sales trips, and other business travel, using the correct locality and month makes hotel budgets and reimbursement policies more consistent.

This guide covers the official Massachusetts GSA rates for fiscal year 2027 (FY2027), from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. It explains lodging ceilings, meals and incidental expenses (M&IE), federal reimbursement rules, private-employer tax substantiation, and how Engine helps businesses apply hotel-spend controls while managing bookings and billing.

Key Takeaways

  • Massachusetts has 13 GSA non-standard rate areas. Across these areas, the combined maximum nightly lodging ceiling and full-day M&IE range from $205 in Springfield to $579 in Nantucket during summer. These combined figures are planning benchmarks, not guaranteed hotel prices or automatic lodging payments.
  • Boston/Cambridge uses a $213 lodging ceiling from November 2026 through February 2027, $305 from March through August 2027, and $365 in October 2026 and September 2027. Its full-day M&IE rate is $92.
  • Standard-rate Massachusetts locations, including Franklin County, use $113 for lodging and $68 for full-day M&IE, for a combined planning amount of $181.
  • Nantucket has the largest seasonal lodging-ceiling difference in the state: $171 from October through May and $487 from June through September, a $316 difference per night.
  • Massachusetts uses five full-day M&IE amounts: $68, $74, $80, $86, and $92. Under federal rules, the first and last travel days generally receive 75% of the applicable M&IE amount.
  • Eight Massachusetts non-standard areas have seasonal lodging ceilings; five have one ceiling throughout FY2027.
  • Under the separate IRS high-low method, qualifying private-employer allowances use $329 a day for designated high-cost CONUS localities and $230 for other CONUS localities, subject to the applicable substantiation rules.

Understanding GSA Per Diem Rates

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) sets lodging and M&IE rates for official federal travel within the continental United States (CONUS). Its FY2027 per diem bulletin establishes the standard CONUS lodging ceiling of $113 and the standard M&IE allowance of $68, alongside higher locality-specific schedules.

For ordinary federal reimbursement, lodging is reimbursed at actual necessary cost up to the nightly ceiling, while M&IE is an allowance determined under federal travel rules. Adding a nightly lodging ceiling to full-day M&IE is useful for planning, but does not establish that a federal traveler automatically receives the maximum lodging amount. Federal agencies may authorize actual-expense reimbursement in qualifying circumstances under the Federal Travel Regulation.

Lodging, Meals, and Incidental Expenses

  • Lodging: The ordinarily applicable nightly room-cost ceiling. For federal CONUS travel, taxes on reimbursable lodging are handled separately from the published lodging ceiling.
  • Meals and incidental expenses (M&IE): The full-day allowance for meals and designated incidental tips, including tips to porters, baggage carriers, and hotel staff. It does not automatically cover parking, airline checked-baggage fees, or hotel security deposits.

The GSA meal breakdown for Boston's $92 M&IE tier is:

Component Daily Amount
Breakfast $23
Lunch $26
Dinner $38
Incidentals $5
Total $92

For federal travelers, meals provided by the government or included in a conference registration can trigger deductions from M&IE. The current federal furnished-meal provision is 41 CFR § 301-11.21, as set out in the Federal Travel Regulation. Separate rules apply to federal first and last travel days, and private employers may use permissible IRS substantiation methods instead of federal voucher procedures.

Why Per Diem Tracking Matters for Businesses

A company may use GSA amounts to design hotel policy thresholds and forecast reimbursable spending. For reimbursements to qualify under an IRS accountable plan, however, the plan must satisfy three requirements:

  • Business connection: The expense must be connected to qualifying business activity, including eligible travel away from the employee's tax home.
  • Substantiation: The employee must substantiate the required dates, location, and business purpose within a reasonable period.
  • Return of excess: The arrangement must require excess advances and unsubstantiated reimbursements to be returned within a reasonable period. This does not require repayment of the unused portion of a properly substantiated meal per diem merely because actual meal spending was lower.

A permitted per diem method can substantiate the amount of qualifying expenses without individual meal receipts, but the required business-travel records still matter. Federal agency voucher and lodging-documentation requirements are separate from private-employer IRS rules. A business can therefore use GSA rates as a budgeting reference without treating them as a complete tax-compliance system.

Massachusetts Statewide Per Diem Rates for FY2027

The GSA Massachusetts schedule lists 13 non-standard areas. Cities and towns outside a listed area receive the standard CONUS rate. Some localities are countywide, while Boston/Cambridge and Falmouth have specific city-level boundaries.

Standard CONUS Rate for Unlisted Locations

Component FY2027 Amount
Lodging maximum $113 per night
Full-day M&IE $68 per day
Combined planning amount $181

Franklin County is generally within the standard-rate area. Worcester County, in contrast, is covered by the Worcester non-standard area, with $140 in lodging and $80 in M&IE.

All 13 Massachusetts Non-Standard Areas

The following totals equal the maximum published nightly lodging amount plus one full-day M&IE allowance. The low and high totals correspond to the lowest and highest lodging months in FY2027; the listed M&IE amount stays constant within each locality for the fiscal year.

GSA Area Lodging Ceiling per Night Full-Day M&IE Combined Daily Planning Amount
Nantucket $171 to $487 $92 $263 to $579
Martha's Vineyard $199 to $473 $92 $291 to $565
Boston/Cambridge $213 to $365 $92 $305 to $457
Falmouth $138 to $247 $86 $224 to $333
Hyannis $131 to $220 $92 $223 to $312
Pittsfield $142 to $188 $86 $228 to $274
Burlington/Woburn $152 to $187 $86 $238 to $273
Quincy $146 to $190 $80 $226 to $270
Northampton $157 $80 $237
Worcester $140 $80 $220
Andover $137 $80 $217
Springfield $131 $74 $205
Plymouth/Taunton/New Bedford $127 $80 $207

Springfield has the lowest full-day M&IE amount among Massachusetts non-standard areas at $74. Boston/Cambridge, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket share the highest M&IE tier at $92. The standard-rate area's $68 M&IE amount remains lower than every Massachusetts non-standard tier.

Boston Per Diem Rates 2027

Boston and Cambridge share a GSA designation covering Suffolk County and the city of Cambridge in Middlesex County. For this locality, full-day M&IE is $92 throughout FY2027. The lodging ceiling changes with the month of travel.

Boston Monthly Lodging Ceilings

Travel Period Lodging Ceiling per Night Combined Full-Day Planning Amount
October 2026 $365 $457
November 2026 through February 2027 $213 $305
March through August 2027 $305 $397
September 2027 $365 $457

The difference between Boston's highest and lowest lodging ceilings is $152 per night. For a three-night visit with rooms priced exactly at the applicable ceilings, the lodging component would be $456 greater in October than in January. Actual booked prices can be different from GSA ceilings, so this calculation compares allowable planning amounts, not proven hotel savings. For a stay spanning two rate periods, each night's applicable ceiling governs that night's lodging calculation.

How Boston Hotel Rates Compare With GSA Caps

According to Engine's per diem study, 44.2% of hotel rates shown in Engine searches for Boston were at or below the applicable FY2027 GSA lodging cap. Within the study's star-class groupings, 94.4% of displayed 2-star rates and 42.9% of displayed 4-star rates met that benchmark.

These findings describe rates displayed in Engine searches, not completed bookings or prices travelers paid. The analysis covered hotel check-ins from October 2025 through September 2026 and compared displayed nightly room prices plus fees payable at the hotel with the corresponding FY2027 GSA lodging caps by month, excluding taxes. It illustrates why budget-conscious hotel policies benefit from both a destination-specific ceiling and access to options across property classes.

Sample Four-Day Boston Trip Budget

Consider a traveler arriving Monday, staying for three nights, and departing Thursday. This federal-style example assumes all three room nights are at the applicable GSA lodging ceiling, two full M&IE days at $92, and two first/last travel days at 75% of $92, or $69 each. It excludes lodging taxes, furnished-meal adjustments, transportation, and other authorized expenses.

Cost Component October 2026 January 2027
Lodging for 3 nights 3 × $365 = $1,095 3 × $213 = $639
M&IE for 2 full days 2 × $92 = $184 2 × $92 = $184
M&IE for 2 travel days 2 × $69 = $138 2 × $69 = $138
Modeled trip total $1,417 $961

The $456 difference arises entirely from the lodging ceiling. It is not a guarantee that an October room will cost $456 more than an equivalent January stay. These calculations use the GSA Boston schedule.

Nearby Boston-Area Rate Zones

Burlington/Woburn (Middlesex County excluding Cambridge) includes destinations such as Lowell, Newton, Somerville, Lexington, Waltham, and Framingham.

  • Lodging: $152 from November 2026 through April 2027; $187 in October 2026 and May through September 2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $86.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $238 or $273, depending on the month.

Quincy (Norfolk County) includes Quincy, Brookline, Dedham, Norwood, Weymouth, and Braintree.

  • Lodging: $146 from November 2026 through April 2027; $190 in October 2026 and May through September 2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $80.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $226 or $270, depending on the month.

Although all three areas are within greater Boston, Cambridge uses Boston's schedule, while the rest of Middlesex County follows the Burlington/Woburn schedule. The county and city definitions, rather than metropolitan-area labels, determine the applicable GSA locality.

Cape Cod and Islands Per Diem Rates

Cape Cod and the Islands include four distinct GSA localities: Falmouth, Hyannis, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. The published FY2027 schedules set the state's highest summer lodging ceilings on the islands.

Nantucket: Massachusetts' Highest Summer Ceiling

Period Lodging per Night Full-Day M&IE Combined Planning Amount
October 2026 through May 2027 $171 $92 $263
June through September 2027 $487 $92 $579

Nantucket's summer lodging ceiling is $316 higher per night than its October-through-May ceiling. For a four-day, three-night federal-style trip in June through September, using three nights at $487 and the same two full days plus two travel days of M&IE used in the Boston example, the modeled amount is:

  • Lodging: 3 × $487 = $1,461.
  • M&IE: (2 × $92) + (2 × $69) = $322.
  • Modeled four-day total: $1,783, excluding taxes and other expenses.

This is a ceiling-based illustration for that itinerary, not a maximum for travel of every duration.

Martha's Vineyard (Dukes County)

Period Lodging per Night Full-Day M&IE Combined Planning Amount
October 2026 through May 2027 $199 $92 $291
June through September 2027 $473 $92 $565

The Martha's Vineyard locality covers Dukes County and maintains $92 full-day M&IE throughout the fiscal year. Its higher lodging ceiling applies for four summer months.

Falmouth and Hyannis on Cape Cod

Falmouth has its own GSA locality, defined as the municipal limits of Falmouth.

  • October 2026 through May 2027: $138 lodging per night.
  • June through August 2027: $247 lodging per night.
  • September 2027: $138 lodging per night.
  • Full-day M&IE: $86.

Hyannis is the GSA designation for Barnstable County excluding Falmouth.

  • October 2026 through June 2027: $131 lodging per night.
  • July and August 2027: $220 lodging per night.
  • September 2027: $131 lodging per night.
  • Full-day M&IE: $92.

For federal travel, the temporary-duty or work location ordinarily establishes the applicable locality; an agency may authorize an alternate lodging-locality rate under the governing rules. For a qualifying private-employer IRS per diem method, the locality is generally where the employee stops for sleep or rest. These are different legal frameworks, and neither is established solely by a hotel's ZIP code.

Western Massachusetts Per Diem Rates

Western Massachusetts generally has more stable published lodging ceilings than the islands, although Berkshire County has a summer adjustment.

Pittsfield (Berkshire County)

Period Lodging per Night Full-Day M&IE Combined Planning Amount
October 2026 through June 2027 and September 2027 $142 $86 $228
July and August 2027 $188 $86 $274

The Pittsfield designation includes Berkshire County, covering Pittsfield, Lenox, Great Barrington, Williamstown, and North Adams. Its lodging ceiling is $46 higher in July and August than in the remaining months of FY2027.

Northampton (Hampshire County)

  • Lodging: $157 per night throughout FY2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $80.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $237.
  • Coverage: Hampshire County, including Northampton, Amherst, South Hadley, and Easthampton.

Springfield (Hampden County)

  • Lodging: $131 per night throughout FY2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $74.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $205.
  • Coverage: Hampden County, including Springfield, Chicopee, Holyoke, and Westfield.

Springfield has the lowest combined lodging-ceiling-plus-M&IE amount among the state's non-standard localities. The standard-rate area's combined amount is lower at $181.

Central and Southeastern Massachusetts Per Diem Rates

Worcester (Worcester County)

  • Lodging: $140 per night throughout FY2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $80.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $220.
  • Coverage: Worcester County.

The lodging ceiling remains $140 in every FY2027 month. That means the GSA allowance is constant, not that hotel market prices remain unchanged throughout the year.

Andover (Essex County)

  • Lodging: $137 per night throughout FY2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $80.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $217.
  • Coverage: Essex County, including Andover, Lawrence, Haverhill, Newburyport, Salem, Lynn, and Gloucester.

Plymouth/Taunton/New Bedford (Plymouth and Bristol Counties)

  • Lodging: $127 per night throughout FY2027.
  • Full-day M&IE: $80.
  • Combined daily planning amount: $207.
  • Coverage: Plymouth and Bristol Counties, including Plymouth, Brockton, Taunton, New Bedford, and Fall River.

These three designations have a single lodging ceiling for the entire fiscal year. Their federal per diem schedules remain distinct from actual hotel prices and from the optional IRS high-low substantiation method.

IRS High-Low Per Diem Substantiation Method

Private employers may use the IRS high-low method for qualifying travel instead of tracking the complete GSA locality schedule for substantiation purposes. The 2026-2027 IRS notice, Notice 2026-60, applies to eligible allowances paid on or after October 1, 2026, for travel on or after that date, subject to the relevant calendar-year transition rules.

2026-2027 High-Low Rates

IRS Locality Type Total Daily High-Low Amount Amount Treated as Meals Remaining Non-Meal Amount
High-cost CONUS $329 $86 $243 (calculated)
Other CONUS $230 $74 $156 (calculated)

The $243 and $156 figures are subtraction results, not separately published GSA nightly lodging ceilings. These IRS amounts serve a tax-substantiation purpose and do not replace GSA lodging and M&IE schedules for federal travelers.

When an employer pays lodging expenses directly to a hotel, any per diem allowance paid to the employee for that travel is treated as an M&IE-only allowance under the IRS substantiation rules. Under the high-low method, the corresponding M&IE-only amounts are $86 for high-cost localities and $74 for other CONUS localities. The full $329 and $230 daily amounts are not additional allowances on top of company-paid lodging. For partial travel days, Revenue Procedure 2019-48 permits private employers to use the federal 75% M&IE proration method or another consistently applied method that follows reasonable business practice.

Massachusetts High-Cost Localities and Dates

Under Notice 2026-60, the Massachusetts locations designated as high-cost for the following periods are:

  • Boston/Cambridge: October 1 through September 30 (year-round).
  • Martha's Vineyard: October 1 through September 30 (year-round).
  • Nantucket: June 1 through September 30.
  • Falmouth: June 1 through August 31.
  • Hyannis: July 1 through August 31.

Other Massachusetts locations, including Worcester, Springfield, and Pittsfield, use the $230 other-CONUS rate under this method. Nantucket, Falmouth, and Hyannis also use that amount outside their specified high-cost periods.

Applying the High-Low Method Consistently

  • Under Revenue Procedure 2019-48, an employer using the high-low method for an employee generally must apply that method to the employee's qualifying CONUS travel throughout the calendar year.
  • During October through December, the transition provisions permit the previous or updated annual high-low rate schedule under specified conditions, with consistent treatment for employees reimbursed using that method.
  • Employees must still substantiate qualifying travel, including time, place, and business purpose, and the employer's arrangement must satisfy accountable-plan requirements.
  • The high-low method addresses substantiation of eligible allowances. It does not itself establish the company's booking limits or guarantee that every reimbursement is excluded from taxable wages.

Why Engine Stands Out for Massachusetts Per Diem Travel Management

Engine is a modern travel management platform for business trips ranging from individual conference visits and sales travel to company offsites and group lodging. For Massachusetts travel programs, it combines a GSA lodging-rate reference in hotel search with booking-stage policy controls, an approval workflow, centralized travel reporting, and consolidated billing. These mechanisms help companies turn GSA-informed budgets into clear booking practices, while employers retain responsibility for their reimbursement and tax treatment.

Travel Policy Enforcement: Location-Based Nightly Caps

With Travel Policy Enforcement, Engine administrators can set flat, tiered, and location-based lodging rate limits and assign policies to all travelers, individual employees, or departments. Administrators can apply a lodging threshold to the nightly room rate or to the total room cost, including taxes and fees. Other supported controls include refundable-booking requirements and property star-rating floors. The published GSA CONUS lodging ceiling excludes lodging taxes, so finance teams can distinguish their own total-cost booking rules from the applicable federal reimbursement calculation.

Engine provides three distinct ways to handle a booking outside the configured policy:

  • Not Allowed: Block the out-of-policy booking.
  • Allowed with Reason: Permit the booking after the traveler records a reason.
  • Allowed with Approval: Send the booking through a designated approval workflow.

A finance team can configure Boston/Cambridge policy thresholds using the appropriate $213, $305, or $365 GSA lodging benchmark and establish different location-based limits for Nantucket, Worcester, and other destinations. As GSA lodging ceilings change by month, administrators can update the configured limits to reflect the company's chosen policy. Engine evaluates the configured rules during the booking flow, making the company's spending policy part of the traveler's booking experience.

Engine administrators can enable Show GSA Per Diem in company settings. When enabled, it displays the GSA per diem rate associated with a hotel property during search, giving travelers and arrangers a rate reference alongside the available lodging options.

For Massachusetts trips, this in-search reference complements Engine's configurable location-based lodging policies and approval rules. The displayed property rate is a booking reference, not a federal reimbursement determination: under federal rules, the temporary-duty work location ordinarily determines the applicable per diem locality, subject to authorized exceptions. This distinction is especially relevant when a traveler works in Boston but stays in a different Massachusetts GSA rate area.

Engine Approvals: Documented Hotel-Booking Exceptions

Engine Approvals routes qualifying out-of-policy booking requests to configured administrators or department managers. Approvers receive email or text notifications, review the traveler's reason and booking details, and approve and book at the available rate or decline with a documented reason.

For a Boston conference or a peak-season island trip, this provides a structured way to authorize necessary exceptions to a company's usual lodging budget without relying only on post-trip expense review. The workflow also covers policy-managed flight and rental-car requests.

Travel Reporting and Analytics: Destination and Cost-Code Visibility

Travel Reporting and Analytics brings booking and billing information into a centralized view. Travel and finance teams can examine spend by destination, travel period, department, team, project, or other configured business fields.

  • Hotel-spend analysis: Review booked lodging expenses and nightly-rate patterns alongside the company's policy thresholds.
  • Seasonal budgeting: Compare Massachusetts travel activity across dates and destinations when preparing future budgets.
  • Cost allocation: Use job codes, project identifiers, general-ledger codes, or cost centers to assign relevant travel expenses to the appropriate budgets.
  • Finance handoff: Use available billing exports and supported accounting integrations, including QuickBooks Online and NetSuite, in the company's accounting workflow.

This gives finance teams a practical basis for evaluating hotel bookings against their own travel rules and for reconciling the resulting expenditures.

Direct Bill: Consolidated Invoicing and Folio Records

With Direct Bill, Engine extends a line of credit, pays eligible hotels, and sends the company consolidated invoices after stays under the applicable billing arrangement. This enables covered room charges to flow through company billing instead of individual traveler advances.

For Massachusetts per diem administration, consolidated statements, available hotel folios, and CSV or PDF exports help finance teams match eligible hotel costs to travelers, dates, projects, and internal cost fields. These records support reconciliation alongside the company's separate reimbursement calculations.

Incidentals Coverage: Cardless Check-In for Eligible Stays

For participating hotels and qualifying Direct Bill reservations, Incidentals Coverage adds an additional check-in mechanism. With Engine's Incidentals Coverage add-on, travelers skip credit card authorization forms at check-in for eligible covered stays.

Hotel incidental holds and property charges are different from the $5 M&IE incidental allocation, which represents designated travel tips under the federal schedule. Keeping these expense categories distinct helps companies apply the right reimbursement and billing treatment.

FlexPro: Hotel Cancellation Through Check-In Day

FlexPro is a paid subscription providing cancellation coverage for eligible company hotel bookings, including qualifying non-refundable rates. Covered reservations can be canceled until noon local hotel time on the scheduled check-in day. For cancellations qualifying for the FlexPro benefit, Engine provides travel credit valid for one year by default.

For conferences, offsites, and Massachusetts trips with changing schedules, this adds a defined cancellation benefit alongside Engine's hotel-booking and travel-policy controls.

Engine Groups: Room Blocks for Nine or More Rooms

Engine Groups supports nine or more rooms for group travel. Its team assists with hotel sourcing, room-block proposals, and group contracting for corporate conferences, offsites, training programs, and other coordinated stays. That extends Engine's Massachusetts travel workflows from individual business bookings to lodging arrangements for multiple travelers attending the same event.

Engine's core booking platform and Engine Groups service are free to use: No platform fees, no membership fees, no agent-assist fees, no contracts, no minimum spend. These terms describe Engine's platform access and Groups service; individual hotel reservations and room-block agreements retain their applicable terms. FlexPro is a separate paid subscription, as described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I identify the GSA locality for a Massachusetts ZIP code?

The official GSA rate lookup identifies locality schedules by city, state, or ZIP code. The underlying GSA definitions are generally county-based, but there are specific exceptions: Cambridge belongs to the Boston/Cambridge locality, and Falmouth is separate from the rest of Barnstable County. For federal travel, the work location ordinarily governs; for the private-employer IRS per diem method, the locality is generally where the employee stops for sleep or rest. A ZIP code is therefore a useful lookup input, but the governing reimbursement or substantiation method determines how the rate applies.

Can Massachusetts employers reimburse above GSA rates?

Yes. Private employers may adopt their own reimbursement amounts. Under IRS accountable-plan rules, the tax treatment depends on eligible expenses, substantiation, and the method used. A per diem allowance above the applicable IRS-recognized amount can create taxable wages for the excess. A properly applied IRS high-low method may substantiate an amount higher than a particular GSA locality amount, while reimbursement of properly substantiated actual qualifying expenses follows a different approach. GSA rates are a benchmark, not a universal legal cap on private-employer payments.

Do temporary assignments become taxable after 30 days?

There is no general IRS rule making a per diem taxable solely after 30 consecutive days. The IRS temporary-assignment framework generally treats a single-location assignment as temporary when it is realistically expected to last, and actually lasts, one year or less. An assignment expected to exceed one year is generally indefinite for tax-home purposes. Eligibility also depends on the employee's tax home, qualifying travel, and the employer's accountable plan. A change in assignment expectations can change the tax treatment.

Do the lodging limits include parking, resort fees, and taxes?

The published federal CONUS lodging ceiling excludes lodging taxes on reimbursable room costs, which are handled separately under the Federal Travel Regulation. Authorized parking can be reimbursed separately under the applicable travel rules and is not an M&IE component. Required resort or destination charges must be evaluated under the lodging and miscellaneous-expense rules; they are not part of the $5 M&IE incidental tip allocation, nor are they automatically excluded from the lodging ceiling. Private-employer hotel policies may use a total-cost threshold that includes taxes and fees.

What happens to M&IE when conference meals are provided?

Under 41 CFR § 301-11.21, a federal traveler generally deducts the allocated cost of meals provided by the government or included in a paid conference registration, subject to the rule's exceptions. For example, on a full Boston per diem day with lunch and dinner provided, the $92 M&IE allowance is reduced by $26 for lunch and $38 for dinner, leaving $28: $23 for breakfast plus $5 for incidentals. Complimentary hotel meals and meals provided by a common carrier are not deducted under this federal provision. Private-employer treatment can differ. Under Revenue Procedure 2019-48, an employer using a qualifying per diem method is not required to reduce the allowance for meals furnished in kind when it reasonably believes the employee incurred or will incur meal and incidental expenses on each travel day. The employer's documented reimbursement policy and applicable IRS requirements determine that treatment.
