Some things they cannot control: Homeless and panhandlers (I spend a lot of time in Manhattan, Cincy, St. Louis and Miami --all have homeless issues) the panhandlers were very aggressive--especially when we ate outside. Noise: tons of immature men with no mufflers runing up and down the street. Can control: Room reeked of cigar smoke (annoyingly so). Food (partially eaten) on plates in the hall for over 12 hours. Wanted some ice--could not get it ourselves and reuested it from the front, it took over 1/2 hour and we hqd to call and cancel the order. Asked for valet to bring car around at a specific time (it was there) and they offered to take our bags from the bag check and put them in the car; they did so and we drove to airport. Once unloading at the ariport we noticed a bag that was not ours in the stack. I called the hotel--they acknowledged their mistake and asked if I could drive the bag back from the airport to them--I could not as I had a flight. It then took about 45 minutes to find the police who would take possession of the bag. Dog: I reserved the room at the beginning and noted we had a dog and the said that was fine--they never told us about the $125 charge until we showed up. Frankly for that amount would have probably considered staying elsewhere. $50.00 valet charge is high for Miami or Cincy. Breakfast: didn't learn I could have had it delived to room until we checked out. All said, Manager was legitimately concerned.

Bedding was lacking, shower pressure was weak and the noise outside is dreadful on a Saturday night...staff was great and location to sporting events top notch.

Everything was great

Breakfast was not up to the usual standards of past complimentary experiences at this hotel. Also on second morning of our stay we were denied breakfast service due to “staffing issues “ even though we are for breakfast during normal breakfast service times. This was very disappointing for a facility of this quality and expense. We love the location and the pet friendliness.

Beautiful craftsmanship and interior design. We had a terrible sleep. The thermostat would not cool the room past 68 degrees. Hot and uncomfortable.
-
Stunning hotel with exceptional service and incredible on site restaurants and bars. The hotel is so close to so many great venues, all within a 10 minute walk.
-
an excellent stay. would return would have been better if there was a staff member at the front desk when we left early in the a.m.

Would stay here again

From the moment my daughter and I arrived we were treated like valued guests. This hotel is generally out of our range but we wanted to splurge a little. The entire staff, especially the front door staff and the doorman made us feel like we’re invited anticipated guests. Room was incredible and clean. Bed was luxurious. Location was excellent for our event at St Andrew’s Hall. We felt safe and spoiled!

First time staying at Shinola; it was like a 5 star resort in an urban setting. The entire complex is laid out so well! There are multiple restaurants, bars, shops, walkways….. it feels like you’ve left the hotel, but you haven’t even left the block it’s on. The rooms are nearly soundproof and you can blast the stereo (yes, they put big Bluetooth speakers in each room) without bothering your neighbors….. we tried it and stood outside the door, couldn’t hear a thing! I don’t ever want to stay at another hotel in Detroit.

My husband and I enjoyed our staycation at Shinola Hotel. The customer service was amazing! We were greeted with champagne, and a warm welcome from our host. The room was clean, comfy, and centered with all the local restaurants and lots of shopping opportunities. I did not like the view. But if you looked far to the left you could see the cobblestone alleyway that leads to most of the restaurants.

I enjoyed every minute of my stay. Having a tea kettle in the room was a great touch. We played Scrabble in the beautiful lobby area, and our server Nick was a delight. The accommodations were beautiful and the downtown location was ideal.

Always a great stay. Nice and clean

Had the best stay! Really translates the quality of Shinola

The staff tried to be really nice but there was a lot of confusion. None of them seemed to know about a complimentary cocktail besides welcome champagne even though it's listed right on the amenity page of their website. We booked through Expedia and it says complimentary cook to order breakfast right on there, which is not true. As part of an extra $30 amenity fee, you get a "continental" breakfast with option to pay even more for cook to order. I was surprised by the $30 amenity fee at checkout and a woman who seemed like the manager said she'd have her marketing team ensure the Expedia listing was accurate. It's been 2 weeks and nothing has changed. Contacted Expedia and they seem just as confused. I'm an experienced traveler and it should not be this hard for guests to figure out what's included in their stay - frankly, I find it misleading. This soured my experience to the point where I wouldn't recommend anyone stay at Shinola. Hopefully by the time others read this review something has changed for the better.
