Golden Gate Hotel

The Golden Gate Hotel is well located and charmingly decorated. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. I always love staying here on my trips to San Francisco!

Good place to stay.

Great home feeling hotel.

Only thing to be aware of is fairly small bed size.

Great location and value for my money. It's also convenient to have to little breakfast to get my day started. There was not always staff at the front desk, and several times other guests were waiting, wondering where staff was.

Front desk was closed when tried to check in. Did not state anywhere the clear process of late check in. Tried calling 30 mins straight trying to get a room i had already paid for. Their "service" was lacking to say the least, i had to get a different hotel room because I couldn't check in. If unable to check people in late or at all dont take my money for the room. Im still waiting to hear back about a refund for the room I never occupied. I have records of phone calls I made to the number provided at the front door and got the run around and no answer to the hotel site just corporate unable to help tangibly.

Location is great, the cable car is just a corner away, Chinatown is close, etc. Rooms are clean. Shared bathrooms were a thing you should really consider to avoid. It is not even like a hostel, where you have several showers and toilettes at the end of the corridor. It is just one single toilet and shower for many rooms. Also you could end up in tiny rooms, widow is facing firewall.

Excellent value for money. The hotel includes breakfast and is located very close to Union Square, making it easy to travel around San Francisco. The hotel has a charming antique feel, which is especially nice if you enjoy history and older architecture. One of my favorite features was the vintage elevator — it is still operating and looks amazing, adding a lot of character to the whole experience. Overall, it’s a great choice if you’re looking for a convenient location, good value, and a hotel with a unique historic atmosphere. One area that could be improved is the soundproofing. Since the hotel is very close to the street, you can hear some traffic and street noise, especially at night. You may also hear people walking along the hallway and opening or closing doors. Some rooms do not have private bathrooms, so guests using the shared bathrooms can create additional hallway noise.

The only “issue” we had was that our room was very warm, but with the fan on and window open it was totally fine

Con’s: Had one of the tons with a shared bath. The bathroom for was malfunctioning, continuously locking you in our out! Very scary later at night! Water pressure was more on our floor, and shower temp was burning hot on our floor, freezing cold on another floor, and finally “just right” yet a third floor. This is crazy and unacceptable! We complained several times. There is an extreme shortage of staff. I blame the management for this f debacle. Sure, it was lower price, but having to go to other floors just to take a shower?!? TV didn’t work until a staff member fixed that problem. Again, managers fault! Staff was doing their best.

Homely environment The air is not fresh in the entrance hall. I love the cat Skittles but I think it makes the room smelly

A great pet friendly hotel right by Union Square! Great location and great prices. There is a $20 amenity fee per day that I wasn’t expecting though. Breakfast was ok (eggs, sausage, toast, yogurt, fruit, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea, milk). They have a cat who lives in the lobby named Skittles and she is adorable! It does NOT smell like urine (like another review said). Our room was quiet, cozy, clean, and we felt safe. We wish that there was a refrigerator in the room. We gave them an 8/10 overall. We would recommend them!

We were only there one night. Got in late. Had to go to another hotel 1/2 a block down the street to check in. Had to go back to that other hotel for breakfast. Breakfast was good though. It seems like the place is being neglected. Room was not bad, sufficient for one night. Easy parking across the street.

The only issue was that there was no housekeeping during my three-night stay, even after I reminded the front desk in the morning. That was a little disappointing. Overall, it was still a comfortable stay, and I would recommend this hotel for its cleanliness, breakfast, and convenient location.

Definitely in a great location, the hotel itself had a lot of charm, I liked that it had the antique elevator and the building was historic. Oh and the cat! We don’t have any complaints, just be aware it’s an old building and it will have its eccentricities.

Would definitely choose this place again if I choose to travel to San Francisco again. We had a great time and enjoyed our stay.

And the room smaller than what do you see in the pictures
