Owner and staff were kind, charming and extremely knowledgeable of the area and gave great recommendations. Rooms were better than any hostel I've ever been at and the kitchen and living room were so cozy it made me forget I was in a hostel. It felt more like a comfy bed and breakfast. Absolutely recommend! ? No complaints!

Clean comfy bed, nice kitchen and common area. Close to homeless area

Really creative atmosphere, at least in the lobby and hallways My room was extremely small, but that was the most inexpensive one, so I expected that.

The location and the amenities offered by the hostel. I think what I liked most was the cleanliness of the hostel and how I felt taken care of by the staff there. Nothing! Everything was amazing about the place.

I have stayed at BEH many times and this has never happened, but I do think it’s worth mentioning. Needless to say, little sleep was had that morning.

The aesthetics, staff and location

The vibe and the coziness! They make hosteling a really unique and memorable experience! Nothing really, only during the reservation process to ask for a lower or upper bunk, as a older traveller it was somewhat of a challenge getting into the top bunk, just will remember to request a lower bunk for the next time, otherwise for what would be a “no frills” stay at a hostel, it was one of the best stays I’ve ever had at a property! Service, value, and the stay was comfortable and enjoyable

Cute decorative common spaces and very clean Beds slightly uncomfortable

The location was great, the staff was amazing and the hostel, itself, was beautiful and clean. The bathroom was beautiful! Our room was very small (approx) 7 X 10. It had a double bed and a small night stand. There was a closet and no place for suitcases. If it matters to people there is no TV but you do have WIFI.

This hostel was clearly designed by someone who has traveled and stayed in their fair share of hostels. Loved that there were lights and plugs by each bed. Hallway bathroom made it possible to get ready for an early departure without waking up the whole bunk. Cozy comfortable shared space with coffee and tea. Location was as good as it gets. Great little place! I arrived late at night and had to self check in, which was fine. Unfortunately I was assigned a top bunk which meant I had to fumble up a ladder in the dark. Two bottom bunks were available so this felt a bit weird and unnecessary.

Highest quality possible for a hostel. Nothing

It felt like home & this is directly due to the warm, friendly, & well-informed staff ensuring everyone was included. The staff was very helpful with things to do & places to go locally, & made a point to interact w/everyone, & include everyone in conversation. The Black Elephant is super clean & homey. My varied roommates, as well as different housemates were all very nice & friendly. I cannot say enough great things about the place, or about the amazing location. It was very comforting to me as a woman traveling alone to know people would be looking for me. There was a misunderstanding about wording in their ad, but it was addressed & corrected by someone while I was still getting checked in. I wish respectful, polite, tobacco smokers could smoke in the garden when no one else is around.

It was so lovely to be able to put our bags in the space and rest before check in. The staff were welcoming and kind and seemed to enjoy the community. We were able to walk to anywhere we wanted to go (shops, cafes, the water, amazing restaurants). We would definitely stay here again next time we are in Portland. Room was a little small but it worked for the night!
