Hotel des Arts

I liked the artwork on the walls and the idea of every room being different. The only thing I would have liked would be air conditioning or some sort of fan in the room. Not sure when the room was designed but there is still a very strong smell of the paint in the room.

Being between SoMa and North Beach, the location is rather convenient.

Almost no amenities, though there is shampoo/lotion/soap. Rooms do not have private bathrooms but do have a sink for washing up in the morning. Shared bathrooms and shower were clean and maintained. No air conditioning, and windows don't have screens. Room digital locks require a digital app on your phone. Front desk is unmanned most of the time, though someone is there during morning checkout hours. Old building. Walls are very thin and doors have large gaps at the bottom, and the clientele seems to like making noise, so consider bringing earplugs. Rooms and hallways were clean. The art on the walls is cute but realistically it's not making you more comfortable. Excellent location. Nitpicks: - I couldn't use the app and would arrive in the evening, called ahead to say so, was given exasperated assurance that there would be someone at the desk when I checked in to give me a physical key, and I'll let you guess whether someone was actually there when I arrived at 8pm. Ended up waiting a full hour to get into the room. - Cleaner was having an extremely loud conversation on speakerphone at 8am while cleaning the room next to mine, loud enough for me to clearly hear every word of both sides of the conversation, and I was on vacation and hoping to sleep in a bit to 9.

If a hotel and a hostel had a baby...tah dah! Hotel Des Arts. First impression was not great because of the tight quarters and quirky bathroom set up, but we ended up enjoying the place very much. The comfy bed was the best part. The top blanket wasn't exactly clean, but the rest was ok. It took about 5 minutes to get the hot water flowing for a shower in the evening, but was quick in the morning. There isn't anyone at the front desk, but you can call them with the phone there. They were helpful and let us stay a bit later than 11am. The luggage storage locker is not supervised and was left open most of the times we were in the eating area. We didn't feel great about leaving our stuff there. Plus, your key codes expire. We couldn't get back into our room when we had permission to stay until noon. Another woman was out on the street as her front door code expired when she came back to get her luggage. These issues can be solved, but might take extra time to sort them out. We found the streets to be safe and enjoyed walking to other Alcatraz tour ferry and a Giants baseball game. We would stay here again.

The individuality of each room, the ease to enter and access the building, the amazing customer service and prompt responses we received on any questions that we had. And the location was incredible. Don’t have much to say about that! It was such a great experience. We would definitely come again.

Also the check-in process was confusing : we thought we'd receive a room key before arrival and the process would be contactless as described. Since we were arriving during the night and the description said limited reception hours, we called to make sure we'd have our key, but turns out we wouldn't have needed to because there was someone at reception at all times.

Emergency or very on the budget place to stay!

So, there aren’t many rooms with bathrooms in them, but there is a useable and clean shared shower and toilet in the hall. It’s downtown so it’s loud there. There is no AC in the rooms we stayed in so we had to open the windows and the first night we heard other patrons all night, and the second night we heard traffic all night.

The place has a lot of charm but is def a bit old. I think it was good for the price

Glad I came

This location + the vintage property was exactly what I wanted and expected. Incredible old school elevator, art everywhere, & crown-work molding, for those of us into that. Please read the listing & know what to expect. If you don’t read carefully, don’t be rude to staff about it. I had no issues with One Key, fabulous housekeeping, CLEAN facilities. Water pressure was the only challenge on the 4th floor, but welcome to gravity in San Francisco; no air conditioning but usually unnecessary in San Fran. I would absolutely stay here again.

Good for the price

Another good stay. Not a fancy place, but clean. Not good in San Francisco's occasional hearwaves: no A/C. It does have a clean clawfoot bathtub,!

Amazing location to party, would not recommend if you want to relax. The mural in our room was maximalist and cool (loved it) the room fixtures are minimalist and inconvenient. Everything is small and flimsy. Very IGable.
