The cafe on the ground floor is nice. Good way to get good coffee. The rooms are the most basic rooms you could possibly imagine. Just a bed and a sink and nothing else. Basically 0 floor space. They smell a bit weird. But you’re literally just paying for the bed. And you have to share a bathroom with 7 other rooms.

Very clean, very comfortable and intelligently designed The surrounding area of Portland was surprisingly smelly and dirty. The hotel at South, however was fantastic.

The coffee and staff. Very small rooms but its ok.

The private room was simple and cozy, exactly what I needed for a solo stay. The bed was comfortable and the water pressure and temperature were perfect. Bedside lamps were convenient when I didn't want the big overhead light on. There are no shelves in the shower, so I had to sit everything the the shower floor–not ideal. Only a small cubby and hangers in the room, I was there 4 nights so I packed a lot. I made it work, but a little 3-drawer chest would've been better!

Leaving Arriving and being told I had to park 4 blocks away, after I was told there was parking on site.

Extended the stay twice because of Amtrak train problems. Front desk people and staff could not have been friendlier. By the end of the week stay I felt like I had new friends. To no fault of hotel and staff the old town neighborhood has dangerous people on the streets. The hotel has security but honestly be careful walking through the neighborhood.

Hazel at the front desk was absolutely lovely—so welcoming, friendly, and professional. My room was exceptionally clean and cozy, with a comfortable bed and wonderfully soft pillows. I was initially a little hesitant about sharing a bathroom, but the facilities were immaculate and quickly put me at ease. I never had to wait for a shower or the restroom, and there were plenty of bathrooms available for the number of guest rooms on my floor. I especially enjoyed the rooftop deck and the coffee shop downstairs. The thoughtful little touches throughout the hotel really stood out: the daily list of neighborhood activities, the invitation to create a coaster to leave behind for future guests, the downtown walking map, and the collection of local publications. I also appreciated the added security of the locked entrance, which required either a keycard or to be buzzed in. One delightful surprise was finding a crisp, clean bathrobe in my room—it was such a thoughtful amenity for guests using the shared bathrooms. I recommend bringing shower slippers! The location is excellent, with plenty of restaurants, shops, and attractions within easy walking distance. I especially recommend visiting the Lan Su Chinese Garden during your stay. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would happily return the next time I'm in Portland. Thank you for such a welcoming and comfortable experience! My only minor complaint was that I wasn't sure how to request a fresh washcloth. I like having a clean washcloth each day, and I ran out after my second day. A note in the room explaining how to request fresh towels or washcloths would have been helpful. Prospective travelers should also be aware that the hotel is located in Old Town, an area that has visible homelessness and open drug use. This is not a reflection of the hotel itself, but of the surrounding neighborhood. I recommend being mindful when coming and going, especially after dark. Stay aware of your surroundings, avoid wearing headphones while walking, and use the same common-sense precautions you would in any urban area. Personally, I never felt threatened and had no negative encounters during my stay. I did witness people openly using drugs on several occasions (smoking crack/meth and shooting up), but they kept to themselves. I would not hesitate to stay at the Society Hotel again because the hotel itself was such a welcoming, clean, and comfortable place.

The location was convenient. I booked a hotel room only to find out upon arrival that somehow I actually booked a bed in a hostel instead. That was very disappointing since there was no mention of a hostel. The bathrooms weren’t the cleanest.

The historic building has character, and the room had a pleasant city view. The location is convenient for exploring downtown Portland, and the hotel did provide earplugs and later offered to move me to a room farther from the street. Before arrival, I specifically requested a quiet room because I needed to rest before a long work week, and I stated that quietness was more important than the view. The request was not acknowledged, and I was assigned a fourth-floor corner room facing the intersection of two loud streets. Traffic, music, and revving engines continued well after midnight, making sleep impossible. I contacted the front desk between midnight and 2:00 a.m. and ultimately checked out after the first night rather than risk another sleepless night. There was also a plumbing issue on the fourth floor: both the in-room sink and the shared bathroom taps produced hot water regardless of which handle was used. The front-desk interaction felt cold and abrupt, and management did not meaningfully acknowledge the room-assignment issue or offer a reasonable resolution. Instead, they relied entirely on the cancellation policy and suggested that guests should research the neighborhood before booking.

I loved the security at the door and how close the parking garage was. Very easy check in and check out process. I think it would be nice to get a token or coupon something for the coffee shop downstairs!

The rooftop was very amazing. The location was in the center of everything we wanted to do
